Expanding What's Possible

Beneath the Map exists to challenge perceptions and expand possibilities.

We didn't just visit Africa and Latin America—we built lives there. As U.S. Foreign Service Officers, we learned the languages, raised families, navigated complex cultures, and discovered the places that don't make it into guidebooks. We know which neighborhood restaurants serve the best food, which local guides are trustworthy, and which experiences will stay with you for years.

Why We Started Beneath The Map

Our mission is simple: introduce travelers to the Africa and Latin America we know—the real communities, authentic experiences, and overlooked destinations that changed our lives. Whether you're exploring for a week or relocating permanently, we're here to make the unfamiliar feel welcoming.

What Makes Us Unique

1. Lived-In Expertise, Not Tourist Knowledge

We don't send you to destinations we researched online. We've lived in these countries—some of us still do. We know which neighborhoods are safest and most welcoming. We know which local guides are genuinely trustworthy versus just good at marketing. We know where to find great food, reliable healthcare, authentic cultural experiences, and welcoming communities. We know this because we navigate it ourselves, not because we read it in a guidebook.

2. Transformation-Focused, Not Transaction-Focused

Travel companies focus on bookings and logistics. We focus on your growth. Every experience we design is built around the question: "What will help this person gain new perspectives, heal from transition, or discover possibilities they couldn't see from home?" Logistics matter, but they serve the deeper purpose of transformation.

3. Genuine Cultural Integration, Not Tourist Consumption

We don't take you on bus tours past landmarks. We introduce you to actual people—host families who welcome you into their homes, local artists and entrepreneurs who share their craft, community organizations doing meaningful work. You experience these cultures from the inside, as a learner and participant, not as a consumer purchasing experiences.

4. Overlooked Destinations, Not Oversaturated Hotspots

While everyone descends on Portugal, Bali, and Costa Rica (driving up costs, creating overtourism problems, and diluting authenticity), we focus on incredible destinations that remain genuinely welcoming, affordable, and culturally rich. Senegal, The Gambia, Uganda, Colombia, Peru—these places offer everything travelers seek without the crowds and commercialization.

5. Ongoing Support, Not One-Time Services

When we guide your relocation, we don't disappear after you arrive. We provide support through the critical first 90 days when culture shock typically peaks. When you book a homestay, we're available 24/7 if issues arise. When you travel with us, we check in after you return home to see how the experience shifted your thinking. We're guides for your journey, not just vendors completing transactions.

6. Honest About Challenges, Not Selling Fantasy

We tell you the hard parts. Bureaucracy can be frustrating. Culture shock is real. Loneliness happens. Learning languages takes time. We don't promise that moving abroad will fix your life. We promise that with the right preparation, support, and mindset, international immersion can create conditions for growth and healing that staying in familiar contexts often cannot. Then we walk beside you through both the beautiful moments and the genuinely difficult ones.

7. Selective About Who We Serve

We don't take every client. We work with people who are genuinely curious about other cultures, willing to step outside their comfort zones, approaching transformation as active participants rather than passive consumers, and ready to invest meaningfully in their own growth. This selectivity ensures we can provide deep, personalized service to each client and maintain the quality of experience that makes transformation possible.
